In 2019, we took a significant step toward addressing the critical healthcare challenges in Bihar with the establishment of Madhubani Medical College and Hospital. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the struggles of people in rural Bihar to access quality healthcare, this initiative was born out of necessity and a strong desire to bring about lasting change.
The Medical Crisis in Bihar
Bihar has long faced a shortage of trained medical professionals, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Most regions in the state lack enough doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers to serve the growing population. The existing medical institutions struggle to meet demand, leading to a situation where people are forced to travel to distant cities for even basic medical care. For many, this simply isn't an option due to financial constraints or the absence of proper transportation.
The Vision Behind Madhubani Medical College
Madhubani Medical College was established with a clear vision: to provide local students with an opportunity to pursue a career in medicine and to create a sustainable healthcare model for Bihar. By admitting 150 students annually into the MBBS program, we are addressing the severe shortage of medical professionals in the region. This ensures that local talent is trained and nurtured to serve the communities that need it most. Our aim is to not only educate doctors but also to inspire them to stay in Bihar and work in their home state, thus preventing the brain drain to larger cities and other states.
Affordable Healthcare for All
Alongside the medical college, we established a 600-bed hospital, one of the largest healthcare facilities in the region, with the aim of providing affordable, high-quality healthcare to the local population. The hospital is designed to be accessible to all, particularly the economically disadvantaged. With consultation fees as low as Rs. 30, and room charges at Rs. 150 per day, we’ve made healthcare more affordable for those who need it most.
This hospital is not just a place for training future doctors, but it’s also an essential health resource for thousands of families in Bihar who previously had little access to quality medical care.
A Sustainable Healthcare Model
The core of Madhubani Medical College and Hospital is the integration of medical education with hands-on healthcare delivery. By combining rigorous academic training with practical experience, we are building a sustainable healthcare model. Our students not only receive classroom instruction, but they also actively participate in patient care, which helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world practice.
This approach serves a dual purpose: it provides quality education to the next generation of doctors, while also meeting the immediate healthcare needs of the community. Our goal is to create a continuous cycle of trained professionals who can serve Bihar for generations to come.
Impact and Future Goals
Since its inception, Madhubani Medical College has made significant strides in addressing healthcare gaps. The college is becoming a beacon of hope for young aspiring doctors from Bihar, and the hospital has been a lifeline for many, providing essential health services to people who previously had limited options.
Looking ahead, we plan to expand the scope of our work. We aim to establish specialized departments, increase student intake, and improve medical infrastructure to ensure that the healthcare system in Bihar continues to grow and evolve.
The healthcare crisis in Bihar is far from over, but with initiatives like Madhubani Medical College and Hospital, we are creating a model for sustainable, community-driven healthcare reform. We are not just training doctors; we are building a healthcare ecosystem that will serve the needs of Bihar’s people for years to come.
As we continue to expand and improve, we invite others—entrepreneurs, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and philanthropists—to join us in this journey. Together, we can create a healthcare system that truly serves every person in Bihar, regardless of their economic background.
